Angelo Vernazza

Portrait of his wife who paints

Author: Angelo Vernazza (Sampierdarena 1869 - Genoa 1937)

Period: 19th century

Portrait of his wife who paints Signed in Vernazza bottom left Oil on canvas, 163X85 cm The slender figure stands out in the center of the canvas, the angelic face sketches a shy smile keeping his gaze down with the palette and the brush in hand: it is therefore , in addition to a portrait of his wife, an allegory of painting. In the background you can see a painting depicting an Annunciation with symbolist and pointillist characters, a theme repeatedly treated by Vernazza: it is a work with clear links to the pointillist technique, applied here with measure, focusing attention on a delicate chromatism and details. ; this aspect is also underlined by the slight pointillism that covers the entire canvas. Provenance: Genoa, private collection. Publications: F. Sborgi, Angelo Vernazza, Genoa, 1979 pag. 31 (cover).
